{"id":27,"date":"2012-02-26T23:07:38","date_gmt":"2012-02-26T23:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/about-2\/"},"modified":"2021-03-25T17:54:24","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T00:54:24","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/ko\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ulsan_city.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[27]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-441 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ulsan_city.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ulsan_city.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ulsan_city-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2 align=\"left\">Date established as a sister city:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 November 20, 1987<\/h2>\n<p>The Portland-Ulsan Sister City Association is a volunteer run, registered \u00a0non-profit, public benefit organization.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to learn more about how to get involved, contact<strong> from our <a title=\"Contact\" href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/contact\/\">Contact Page.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Current Portland-Ulsan connections:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Port of Portland serves as a primary U.S. gateway for Hyundai cars, shipped from Ulsan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>June 2012, \u00a0the Mayor of Ulsan, Bak Maeng-Woo, accompanied by an 7-person delegation will visit Portland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>June 2012, the 90-member Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a FREE symphony concert in Portland, Oregon to commemorate the unity of the 25-year sister city relations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>June and July are active <em>\u201cUlsan months\u201d<\/em> in Portland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u00a0\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Delegates from and\/or representing Ulsan City often visit Portland to participate in our annual Rose Festival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u00a0\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 50-60 students from Ulsan (from the University of Ulsan, College of Design and School of Architecture; and from Hyundai ChungUn High School) visit Portland annually in July.<\/p>\n<h2>Past years:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Since 1995, Portland State University and the University of Ulsan have had an active sister university exchange, that regularly includes faculty, students, and art exhibitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In June 2007,\u00a0 the City of Ulsan Mayor Bak Maeng-Woo, together with a 20-person delegation, and performing arts group visited Portland during Rose Festival.\u00a0 The City of Ulsan sponsored a float in the 2007 Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2008, Rotary International sponsored a group study exchange between Rotary District 5100 (that includes the Portland area) and Rotary District 3720 (that includes Ulsan).\u00a0 Four young professionals from the Portland area accompanied by a Rotarian team leader visited Ulsan for 1 week, while four young professionals from the Ulsan area visited Portland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0In January 2010, four Ulsan transportation officials visited Portland to study Portland\u2019s TriMet light rail system, in preparation for developing their own light rail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>History of the relationship:<\/h2>\n<p>The Portland-Ulsan Sister City Association exchanges several delegations from the city governments, local universities, and commerce and trade organizations. An Ulsan-Portland intercultural exchange has been set up, involving\u00a0 students and faculty of the University of Ulsan and Portland State University, as well a summer program in Portland for visiting high school juniors from Ulsan&#8217;s elite private academy, Hyundai ChungUn High School.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"left\">Why Ulsan?<\/h2>\n<p>Ulsan is a center of shipping, ship repair, plywood, motor-car manufacturing, electronics and high technology development. Among\u00a0Portland&#8217;s local companies which have offices in Korea include Tektronix, Nike, Lasco Shipping Co., Mentor Graphics, and the Port of Portland. Korean companies that have offices in Portland include the Hyundai Group and Pan Ocean Shipping Co.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Motor Company has rolled more than 2 million cars through Port of Portland.\u00a0 Portland saw more than 275,000 vehicles roll across the docks in 2012, and each one has an estimated economic impact of $271 to the local economy. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundainews.com\/en-us\/releases\/1681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more&#8230;<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In 1986, the Mayor\u2019s of both cities agreed that their cities should cooperate in the following activities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The development of programs for the promotion of tourism;<\/li>\n<li>The development of programs for the promotion of trade and mutual economic development activities; and<\/li>\n<li>The development of activities that will enlarge the feelings of friendship between the citizens of these two cities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Ulsan\u2019s other international sister cities:<\/h3>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Ahmedabad, India<\/li>\n<li>Changchun, China<\/li>\n<li>Hagi, Japan<\/li>\n<li>Hualien City, Taiwan<\/li>\n<li>Kanh Hoa, Vietnam<\/li>\n<li>Karagandy, Kazakhstan<\/li>\n<li>Kumamoto City, Japan<\/li>\n<li>Izmit, Turkey<\/li>\n<li>Santos, Brazil<\/li>\n<li>Tomsk, Russia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why join the Portland-Ulsan Sister City Association?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you have a personal, business, or organizational affiliation to\/ or interest in Ulsan? or Korea in general?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Do you have an interest in international exchange involving regional arts and cultural, or education?
