Ulsan&#8217;s citizens are highly educated and youthful; the average age is 33.<\/p>\n<p>Ulsan is located in the south-east of the country, neighboring <a title=\"Busan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Busan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Busan<\/a> to the south and facing East Sea (<a title=\"Sea of Japan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea_of_Japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sea of Japan<\/a>)\u00a0to the east.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Map Credit: CIA World Fact Book<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Economy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/UlsanCityView-125x1251.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[128]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-352\" title=\"UlsanCityView-125x125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portlandulsan.org\/korea\/uploads\/2012\/02\/UlsanCityView-125x1251.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Ulsan is the industrial powerhouse of South Korea. \u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Three major industries<\/span><\/strong> &#8212; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">automobile manufacturing<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shipbuilding<\/span>, and<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> petro-chemical products<\/span>&#8211;form the heart of the <em>Ulsan Industrial District, \u00a0<\/em>which is home to the world&#8217;s largest <a title=\"Automobile\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Automobile\">automobile<\/a> assembly plant operated by the <a title=\"Hyundai Motor Company\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyundai_Motor_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyundai Motor Company<\/a>,\u00a0the world&#8217;s largest <a title=\"Shipyard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shipyard\">shipyard<\/a> operated by <a title=\"Hyundai Heavy Industries\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyundai_Heavy_Industries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyundai Heavy Industries<\/a>\u00a0and the world&#8217;s largest oil refinery, owned by <a title=\"SK Energy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SK_Energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SK Energy<\/a>; and hundreds of satelite businesses and R &amp; D centers that serve these industries.<\/p>\n<p>Other major companies in Ulsan include: \u00a0Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, the 4th largest shipbuilder in the world and other leading petro-chemical companies such as Eastman, Mobil, Dupoint, BASF, and Solvay.<\/p>\n<p>As a global-industrial port city, Ulsan boasts the <span style=\"color: #808000;\">largest industrial harbor in Korea<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>With an export value $78.8 billing USD, Ulsan&#8217;s production is 13.1% of the total industrial output of Korea. \u00a0Ulsan produces 35% of the petrochemical output in Korea, and 16% of the world&#8217;s ships.<\/p>\n<p>A new industry taking hold in Ulsan is renewable energy, particularly, rechargeablae automobile and small batteries an dwind turbans. \u00a0A &#8220;Green Energy City&#8221; is also being developed.<\/p>\n<p>The city boasts a <span style=\"color: #808000;\">per captial GDP of $45,000 USD<\/span>, twice the Korean national average.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Environmental Restoration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ulsan is fast becoming an eco-friendly city by improving its environment, ecology, and quality of life for its citizens. \u00a0With beautiful mountains, clean and clear rivers and the deep blue sea, Ulsan has been changing itself into an eco-friendly ecolgoy city by thoroughly coordinating preservation and development for the last 20 years.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ulsan is also working to revive the cultural traditions of its 5000 year history, as well as develop contemporary traditions that blend both old with new. \u00a0Traditionally a fishing village, Ulsan is known for fresh seafood. \u00a0The area around Ulsan is also historically well known for ceramics and pottery.<\/p>\n<p>Recent improvements include clean-up of the Taehwa River that runs through the middle of the city, and the development of ulsan Grand Park.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The city is home to 2 soccer teams: \u00a0the K-League Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i <span style=\"color: #808000;\">(Ulsan Hyundai Tigers<\/span>), and the Korea National League <span style=\"color: #808000;\">Ulsan Mipo Dockyard<\/span> soccer team.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Educational Institutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ulsan is home to several universities and colleges, including the University of Ulsan.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Economic &amp; cultural heritage\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p align=\"left\">Originally a traditional coastal whaling\/fishing town and market center, Ulsan was transformed into an industrial city in iin1962 and continuing through the 1980s.\u00a0\u00a0As part of South Korea&#8217;s first five-year economic plan, Ulsan became an open port in the 1960s.
